Hello all,
I had a conversation with a USAA claims representative who was very nice.
I have asked for USAA to specify exactly what additional information they need to process and approve this claim.
While I await those instructions, I want to make sure we are all seeing the same thing:
- the attached estimate which appears to have been prepared by the adjuster,
- the estimate submitted by my contractor
- The following pictures contained in the google file, https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eAABd_0LgtMOnvJIFTsSuo4hLksBI3S8?usp=sharing, that document, wall by wall, the moisture readings on insulation and carpet throughout the house.
Looking at that information in total, I am at a loss to understand what else you need.
Hurricane Sally was an unusual and insidious hurricane.
For the record, if the family had not spent $40,000 over the past year, replacing all the windows and doors in the house, we might be looking at a total loss.
Sally subjected the property to winds in excess of 100 miles per hour for an extended period of time and was accompanied by torrential rain that infiltrated the walls of the house, via the soffits and from under the ridges of the metal roof.
In the end all the walls that have a connection to the exterior needed to be torn out, the insulation replaced, and the sheet rock replaced. The carpet and padding in some areas was completely saturated. Throughout the house, the of the carpet edges by the walls registered high levels of moisture.
We were told by USAA to take moisture readings and tear out areas that needed to mitigated so as to prevent mold, which had already started growing to the extreme.
You have comprehensive measurements of the house.
You have documentation that all the walls connected to the exterior have to be replaced.
The contractor has provided a price for 7,368 square feet of insulation, 6,238 square feet of drywall, plus measures of trim. Plus a cost to replace the cypress paneling.
We have yet to receive an acceptable estimate for the 2,700 square feet of carpeting that will be required.
I appreciate the fact that USAA is trying to make sure it is paying only covered costs.
- However, I want to remind you that this Gulf Shores house has been insured by USAA for 20 years and has had almost no claims activity (there was a modest flood claim years ago but that is a separate policy). And the current annual premium is over $22,000 a year.
- My parents home in Birmingham was covered by USAA for 40 years with almost no claims history.
- My parents, who both served in the Air Force including my father's service in the Reserves, insured four to 5 cars with USAA, from the 1980s until last year.
- I personally have carried USAA auto insurance since I started driving. I am now 52. I currently insure 5 cars with USAA and two houses.
I have always praised and recommended USAA because in my limited experience with claims, the company has been responsive, trusted, and timely. I hope that relationship will continue.

The additional information requested by USAA has been sent by my contractor.
I have not heard back from USAA in response.
We are now out of pocket a significant amount making repairs. And we are at a point where we need to pay the contractor an additional sum to continue the work.
I trust that the additional information has made it to all relevant parties. I need information as soon as possible in order to proceed.

This email is to Melissa Ann Sullivan, representing USAA and N&D Pro Construction
I would appreciate confirmation from both parties confirming receipt of this email. I would also like to be copied on any submission to USAA and any further communication between N&D and USAA and its represernatives.
N & D Pro Construction has been given the number for Claim Rep.: Zach Bruckerhoff, AFIS, HCI-R Business: (636) 357-7219 who is listed as the
Claim representative.
N & D Pro Construction has represented to me that photographic documentation of moisture readings have previously been shared with USAA.
Melissa from USAA stated today (and in the correspondence below) that the information provided thus far has been inadequate.
We need clear communication over what exactly was removed because of water infiltration and what will need to be replaced. The initial adjuster's report in no way captured the extent to which moisture had infiltrated the walls of the house and the flooring.
Between October and January, we have been waiting on an estimate to replace the carpeting that was removed. Both the contractor and the homeowner have sought and estimate, but the companies in the area are overwhelmed and are not complying. It was my understanding that the estimate was sent in with clarification that we had yet to receive a proper cost estimate for the replacement of the carpet.
In the morning of 1/11 I received an email that indicated the revised estimate "had been completed." I authorized N&D to order the materials needed to start the rebuild, including the insulation and the sheet rock.
A subsequent email was received after 5 p.m. on 1/11 that indicated the estimate had not been approved.
We need to work expeditiously to settle the outstanding matters.
